Jerez day one - Raikkonen leads the way for Lotus |
2012-02-08 01:10:00 |
| He may have been away from the sport for the last two seasons but that didn't stop 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen from topping the timesheets, as this year's opening test got underway in Jerez on Tuesday. Raikkonen clocked a best time of 1m 19.670s at the Spanish circuit in the new Lotus E20.
Paul di Resta was second in Force India's 2012 car, the VJM05, ahead of Nico Rosberg, who was third in the 2011-spec Mercedes. Rosberg's team mate Michael Schumacher was also in action in the MGP W02 during the day and took the sixth slot. The team focused on testing Pirelli's 2012 tyres.

Race - Vettel eases to inaugural Indian victory |
2011-10-30 20:42:00 |
| Sebastian Vettel won the 2011 Formula 1 Airtel Grand Prix of India, but it might as well have been a replay of his victory in Korea a fortnight ago as he simply ran away and hid and left Jenson Button to chase him from a distance.
Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber were even further behind while yet another clash with Felipe Massa left a bitterly disappointed Lewis Hamilton to a seventh-place finish in the McLaren behind the Mercedes duo of Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg.

| HRT's Vitantonio Liuzzi has been penalised by the Italian race stewards following his accident at the start of Sunday's Monza race. Liuzzi receives a five-place grid penalty for the next round in Singapore.
He lost control of his car going into Turn One, before sliding on the grass and back on to the track at the chicane. Nico Rosberg's Mercedes, Vitaly Petrov's Renault and Liuzzi's own HRT all had to retire on the spot. After a post-race investigation, the stewards decided the Italian driver was at fault for the accident.

Felipe Massa sprung a surprise by qualifying his Ferrari fourth on 1m 50.256s, but team mate Fernando Alonso could only manage eighth on 1m 51.251s. That left the Spaniard behind fifth fastest Nico Rosberg on 1m 50.552s, splendidly on-form Jaime Alguersuari who took his best-ever qualifying slot of sixth in the Toro Rosso on 1m 50.773s, and surprise of the meeting Bruno Senna who put his Renault seventh with 1m 51.121s.

Franz Tost Q&A: Drivers key to Toro Rosso success |

| The recent Hungaroring weekend witnessed some memorable statistics: Jenson Button won on his 200th F1 start and Nico Rosberg made his 100th Grand Prix appearance. Less well publicised was the fact that Scuderia Toro Rosso also hit the tonne.
Team principal Franz Tost paints a very positive picture of those 100 races, even though Toro Rosso's purpose has shifted significantly over the last two years. From being an incubator for future Red Bull Racing drivers, they have transformed into a full-blown constructor, albeit still with a strong focus on breeding. The breeding has been good, as the Budapest result showed, with both Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari in the points

Paddock Postcard from the Nurburgring |

One of the standout moments was Nico Rosberg piloting Juan Manuel Fangio's 1954 Mercedes around the legendary track. Fangio took victory in the '54 German Grand Prix at the wheel of his W196, with a winning time of just over 3 hours 45 minutes.

For some, like Mark Webber at March's Australian Grand Prix, the pressure - and on the flipside the boost of a home crowd - rests on just their shoulders. Others have to share the load (and split the support) with their fellow countrymen on the grid. Spare a thought then for the sport's German contingent - Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg, Nick Heidfeld, Michael Schumacher, Adrian Sutil and Timo Glock - ahead of this weekend's Nurburgring race. And though the old circuit was lengthened for 2010, it retained its essential character, and even gained another flat-out sweeper, now Turn One

Nico Rosberg Q&A: Mercedes still too hard on tyres |
2011-06-11 01:53:00 |
| Once you have identified the cause of a problem, usually a solution is near. At least that is what Nico Rosberg hopes. The heavy rear tyre degradation his Mercedes has been causing in races has been the main issue behind his poor 2011 results so far. But the team have been working flat out to eliminate the MGP W02's shortcomings - and hopefully it will show this weekend. Rosberg dominated Friday's opening session in Montreal, but speaking afterwards the German remained very much aware that striking the right balance between practice and race pace is where the true challenge lies

Qualifying - Vettel on pole in Monaco after Perez shunt |
2011-05-28 22:56:00 |
| Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel was in the right place at the right time in a dramatic final qualifying session in Monaco on Saturday afternoon, to take his fifth pole of the season.
Just after the world champion had gone fastest, the session was red flagged with 2m 26s remaining when Sergio Perez, who had done a great job to run ninth in Q2, lost his Sauber over the bumps exiting the tunnel. Perez was wider off line than Mercedes' Nico Rosberg had been in the morning, but thereafter his accident followed the trend of the German's as he crashed first into the right-hand barriers. That crushed the right-hand side of the C30, which then ran down the road and broadsided, on the right-hand side again, into the same chicane wall that Sauber driver Karl Wendlinger had struck back in 1994.
