Barcelona day two - Hulkenberg on top for Force India |
2012-02-23 01:33:00 |
| Force India's Nico Hulkenberg ended the second day of testing at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya as the quickest runner. Hulkenberg posted a best time of 1m 22.608s on Wednesday at the Spanish track to beat the Sauber of Sergio Perez by four hundredths of a second.
Perez completed 85 laps in the C31, despite an exhaust problem towards the end of the day. Quite a few high priority points have been ticked off the job list, explained Giampaolo Dall'Ara, Sauber's head of track engineering. In the morning we started with aero comparisons, and then did some proper mechanical set up work. We also carried out a full comparison of all tyre compounds and ran different fuel loads.

Keeping the faith - Exclusive Q&A with Peter Sauber |
2012-02-14 18:34:00 |
| Sauber team principal Peter Sauber is a no-nonsense type of guy. He knows that Formula One racing is a difficult environment for smaller teams, with its rapid technical development invariably accompanied by equally rapid spending.
But over the years his ambition has never diminished, and this season he's confident his team can improve on their below-par 2011 showing. With a young and talented driver line-up in Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Perez, and the new C31 looking strong at the opening pre-season test, he may not be disappointed

2012-02-09 01:07:00 |
| In 2011 Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi was suddenly propelled into a lead driver role after his team signed rookie Sergio Perez. For Kobayashi, who was himself only in his second season of Formula One racing, it was a big ask especially with mid-season regulation changes and a lacklustre car to contend with. But in spite of the headaches, the Japanese driver relished the opportunity and in 2012 he hopes to use all the lessons he learnt to excellent effect

Perez-Sala steps up to become HRT team principal |
2011-12-15 19:28:00 |
| Former Formula One driver Luis Perez-Sala has replaced Colin Kolles as HRT's team principal. Perez-Sala, who joined the Spanish team in July as a sporting advisor, made 26 Grand Prix starts for Minardi from 1988-89.
This naming is an honour but also a great responsibility, said the Spaniard. I joined the team as an advisor to the new owners and to contribute with my experience in any possible way. We had to establish a base from which to grow slowly and we are now seeing the first rewards of that work. But we mustn't lose our perspective and be aware that assuming responsibilities such as designing the car or moving the headquarters to Spain are huge tasks and we still have a lot of work ahead.

Although he believes it took him four races to fully recover from the accident, overall Perez is pretty happy with his rookie year and his 15th place in the drivers' standings. He reviews the high and lows of his 2011

Though it is only his second full Formula One season, he is already taking on the responsibilities that naturally fall to the more experienced driver in the team. We are delighted with him at both a sporting and a personal level. We had an option of working with him in 2012 and there was never any doubt that we would take it.

Perez: I want to race in Montreal |

However, if Perez is to race in Montreal he will have to undergo - and pass - an FIA medical test which will ascertain if he is ready to return to the cockpit.
I feel very good and fit, he said. Of course I want to race in Montreal, but I also know the final decision is up to the FIA doctors. I have never been to Montreal and know the circuit only from watching TV. Originally it was planned I would go to the Ferrari simulator at Maranello, but this had to be cancelled after my accident.

Paddock Postcard from Monte Carlo |
2011-05-29 19:13:00 |
| Monaco may turn itself over to Formula One racing for the weekend of the Grand Prix, but tradition dictates that football takes centre stage before the on-track action begins, with the annual pre-race 'World Stars' charity match. This year's event - the 18th to be held - was raising money for the reconstruction of the church in Port au Prince, Haiti.
Whilst the Star Team MC, made up of international sports names, was captained by Monaco's very own HSH Prince Albert II, the Formula One side was captained Ferrari's Fernando Alonso. Sauber's Sergio Perez, HRT's Vitantonio Liuzzi, Ferrari's Felipe Massa, Renault's Vitaly Petrov, Virgin Jerome D'Ambrosio and Force India reserve Nico Hulkenberg were amongst the other drivers in action.

Qualifying - Vettel on pole in Monaco after Perez shunt |
2011-05-28 22:56:00 |
| Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel was in the right place at the right time in a dramatic final qualifying session in Monaco on Saturday afternoon, to take his fifth pole of the season.
Just after the world champion had gone fastest, the session was red flagged with 2m 26s remaining when Sergio Perez, who had done a great job to run ninth in Q2, lost his Sauber over the bumps exiting the tunnel. Perez was wider off line than Mercedes' Nico Rosberg had been in the morning, but thereafter his accident followed the trend of the German's as he crashed first into the right-hand barriers. That crushed the right-hand side of the C30, which then ran down the road and broadsided, on the right-hand side again, into the same chicane wall that Sauber driver Karl Wendlinger had struck back in 1994.
